DESCRIPTION:\nProfessor Kevin Outterson will give the ANTRUK 2021 Annual L
ecture\n\n\nWe’re delighted to announce the title of this year’s ANTRUK A
nnual Lecture:&nbsp\;‘Smarter ways to buy antibacterials’&nbsp\;given by
Professor Kevin Outterson. Professor Outterson is the Executive Director
of&nbsp\;CARB-X.\n\nDeveloping new treatments against antibiotic resistan
t bacteria is of key importance if we are to see a world where no one die
s from a drug-resistant infection. These new treatments can only be devel
oped if there is sufficient funding available to support blue skies resea
rch. CARB-X (Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Biopharmaceutical Ac
celerator) is one of the prime funders of early stage drug development.\n
\nWith up to US$480 million to invest in 2016-22\, CARB-X funds the best
science from around the world. The CARB-X portfolio is also the world’s l
argest early development pipeline of new antibiotics\, vaccines\, and rap
id diagnostics. CARB-X develop other products to prevent\, diagnose and t
reat life-threatening bacterial infections as well.\n\n2021 ANTRUK Annual
  Lecture\nProfessor Outterson’s lecture\,&nbsp\;‘Smarter ways to buy anti
bacterials’\, will take place in the afternoon of Thursday 21 October 202
 1. We’re hosting the event at the&nbsp\;Royal College of Pathologists\, 6
Alie Street\, London E1 8QT. The event will be face to face but we are h
oping to have a virtual option for those outside the UK.\n\nAbstract: Ant
ibacterial effectiveness is a global public good\, but is being eroded by
resistance and broken business models. Professor Outterson will outline
the problems we face from drug-resistant bacteria. Importantly\, he will
outline clear solutions\, focusing on changing the way health systems and
governments buy antibacterials. The UK leads the world on this issue.\n\
 nTickets for the event can be obtained from Eventbrite by clicking&nbsp\;
HERE. Media enquiries should be sent to&nbsp\;media@antibioticresearch.or
g.uk\n\nYou can also find out more about supporting our life saving work&
nbsp\;HERE. Antibiotic Research UK is the world’s first charity dedicated
to overcoming bacterial antibiotic resistance. Resistance is a global he
alth disaster that is already killing 700\,000 people a year. Without int
ervention\, it will become a global health crisis predicted to cause 10 m
illion deaths per year by 2050.\n\n
