Welsh Minister of Economy opens CatSci’s New Material Science Laboratory

Cardiff, UK – 20/09/2021 – CatSci Ltd, a scientifically-led, commercially-minded and award-winning innovation partner for medicines development was proud to host Vaughan Gething MS, Welsh Minister of Economy, at its facility in Cardiff to open a new material science laboratory. A key milestone of the company’s ambitious £3m investment plan, this new laboratory will further cement the UK’s position as a centre for excellence in pharmaceutical research and development and help increase the UK’s scientific international trade.

As well as opening the new laboratory Mr. Gething toured CatSci’s world-class facilities and discussed with staff CatSci’s impressive contribution to the growing Welsh STEM sector and its significant impact on expediting the delivery of life-changing medicines to patients worldwide.

Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething, said: “The Welsh Government is committed to working with companies across Wales to help them create new jobs in the industries of the future, and I’m very pleased we have been able to work with CatSci as they expand operations in Wales.

Exports of goods and services already contribute a significant amount to our economy. It is vital that we are able to maintain, and grow, this contribution in order to meet the challenges we face both now and in the future. That’s why we’re determined to improve Wales’ export performance even further, despite the challenges in the global trading environment in recent times.”

Dr Ross Burn, CEO at CatSci, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Welsh Minister of Economy to open our new state-of-the-art material science laboratory and see first-hand the excellent work that is being delivered by our talented team here in Cardiff consolidating Wales’ position as the place to go for best-in-class pharmaceutical research and development services.”

Dr Robert Dennehy, Director of Crystallisation and Solid State at CatSci, added: “It is an exciting time to be expanding our material science capabilities offering a holistic approach to particle science and pre-formulation development. I was delighted to show the Minister our state-of-the-art facilities and discuss the positive effect our work has on the development of new therapeutics and Wales’ growing life science sector.”

Dr Jenny Wallis, Business Development Manager at CatSci, said: “We have seen great success in exporting and this has been central to our business growth. With the new facilities we are looking to continue innovating, build on our recent success and further grow our international trade.

Welsh Government support has helped us with our export activities, including market exploration and trade exhibitions as well as general advice from knowledgeable and experienced people. Any Welsh business looking to export or to export more, I would encourage them to speak to the Welsh Government’s export team.”

This year, CatSci is celebrating 10 years of Innovation. To mark this incredible milestone, CatSci is hosting a three-day online symposium entitled: The Next Decade of Drug Development. This free event will take place 5-7 October and includes a fantastic line-up of speakers from AstraZeneca, Bristol Myers Squibb, DeepMatter, Infinity Pharmaceuticals, Merck, R.I., Roche, Novartis, Syngenta and more.
