Pharmaceutical Reform Alliance Releases New Report Detailing Big Pharma’s Role in Fueling America’s Affordability Crisis

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, the Pharmaceutical Reform Alliance (PRA) released a report explaining how the pharmaceutical industry’s anti-competitive and anti-consumer business practices have led to higher healthcare costs, contributing to America’s affordability crisis. PRA is publishing the report, entitled "The State of U.S. Drug Pricing: Unaffordable," as healthcare affordability remains a top concern for American families, especially heading into this year’s elections.

The report explains pharmaceutical industry tactics and dynamics that increase drug prices for American consumers, including:

  • The pharmaceutical industry’s decades-long practice of increasing prices of hundreds of drugs at the beginning of each year.
  • The patent tactics drugmakers use to delay the market entry of lower-cost alternatives, costing consumers over $50 billion in higher prescription drug spend.
  • Pharmaceutical companies’ massive extraneous expenditures, including how pharmaceutical companies spent nearly $38 million on lobbying, $32.4 million on a single executive’s compensation, and $9 billion on marketing in 2025 alone.

"Year after year, prescription drug prices continue to soar in our country – forcing hardworking Americans to choose between lifesaving medications and basic necessities like food and rent," said PRA spokesperson and former Congressman J.D. Hayworth (R-AZ). "We’ve reached this breaking point due to Big Pharma’s pricing and business practices that boost their profits at the expense of patients’ financial wellbeing. Everyone needs to read this timely and critical report that exposes how pharmaceutical companies maintain artificially high prices while patients suffer."

PRA is calling on Congress and the Administration to take action on commonsense reforms that will finally rein in Big Pharma and make life more affordable for all Americans.

The report is publicly accessible HERE.
