As Republican Congressmen line up to attack Barack Obama’s landmark U.S. healthcare reforms ahead of next month’s mid-term elections, reforms on this side of the Atlantic are receiving equally forceful criticism.
As Republican Congressmen line up to attack Barack Obama’s landmark U.S. healthcare reforms ahead of next month’s mid-term elections, reforms on this side of the Atlantic are receiving equally forceful criticism. Yet while Americans continue to debate the fundamental virtues of insuring all of its citizens, in Britain we are simply focussed on funding our National Health Service for the future. But that’s not to say that the debate isn’t equally as fierce. At least from one angle, the government’s argument for reform of the health service is solid. Namely, even with the Departme…

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia provides a new opportunity for clinical research, and can open doors to untapped populations, explains Rani Abraham at ClinTec International
Recently, there has been a definite increase in the potential for investment in the clinical trials sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Certain reforms in the sector such as the establishment of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA)and the growth of the local pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, in combination with the growing importance of data from different races or ethnic populations, have made KSA an attractive country for conducting clinical trials. In the last decade, ethnicity and socio-economic differences in relation to disease incidence, diagnosis and prognosis have attracted attention. The inclus…

Over the last few years, many companies have started to offer CV appraisals to the extent that the market is now flooded with offers of free advice. I remember the days when we and one or two other CV writing companies offered such a service and it became a very effective way of building relationships with customers and strutting our expertise on all things CV related.

There has been some conjecture amongst professionals regarding the merits of a personal profile on a CV. This conjecture stems from the fact that many job seekers fill there personal profiles with irrelevant and mostly clichéd information.

This conjecture stems from the fact that many job seekers fill there personal profiles with irrelevant and mostly clichéd information. Here at the CV & Interview Advisors, we offer free CV Appraisals, therefore see hundreds of CVs per week. In my capacity as a Career Consultant, I have worked closely with freelancers & contractors for many years and two challenges keep rearing their ugly head: Firstly, how does a freelancer write a CV that isn’t six pages long; and secondly, what happens if you want to apply for a role that draws upon skills gained in a contract that isn’t the most recent piece of work that you have done.

In a climate of fiscal hardship, everybody has a special case to plead. Indeed, when the funding scalpel is out, every department and almost every recipient of public sector funds has a special tale to tell. The truth is, science funding really is that important.
In a climate of fiscal hardship, everybody has a special case to plead. Indeed, when the funding scalpel is out, every department and almost every recipient of public sector funds has a special tale to tell. The truth is, science funding really is that important. Our universities depend on it. Yet far aside from its importance in mere academic terms , nearly a quarter of our economy depends on science and technology funding – including big pharma. Universities add £59bn to the UK economy every year and important sectors of our eco…

If you have written material for a journal like this one, or a book, we may be holding monies due to you. None of us can afford to be complacent about money, especially during a recession. In addition to your day job, if you have had an article published in a printed academic or trade journal or written or contributed to a book then the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS) could be holding money owed to you.Why would we be holding money owed to you?If books, magazines and journals containing your work are available to be photocopied or scanned in schools, universities, businesses or public sector bodies then you may be entitled to a share of the income collected. As healthcare innovation produces new treatments, and new information delivers increased awareness, a substantial rise in prescription drug use is only to be expected. For the most part, this can largely be seen as a positive development.
As healthcare innovation produces new treatments, and new information delivers increased awareness, a substantial rise in prescription drug use is only to be expected. For the most part, this can largely be seen as a positive development. To think of just one area, today not only are we more aware of the challenges that various forms of mental illness can bring, but we’re more willing to face up to them. It is perhaps then unsurprising to learn that the market for anti-depressants has grown significantly in the last ten years. In other areas too, increase…
Potentially lifesaving science should not be marginalized to the status of a political football. Yet for so many years in the United States, that’s exactly what stem cell science has become.
Potentially lifesaving science should not be marginalized to the status of a political football. Yet for so many years in the United States, that’s exactly what stem cell science has become. To be entirely fair to the government of the United States, they’re not the only ones to have been subject to the kind of emotionally-charged debate surrounding the ethics of embryonic stem cell research. Several European Union countries, including Germany and Italy, have long held tough stances on embryonic stem cell research, having banned the production of embryonic cells from pre-existing stem cell lines. In th…
Last week, leaders from companies like AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer and Roche met in Vienna in a closed meeting to discuss the future of the pharma industry. Fears of layoffs at pharmaceutical companies are once again dominating the news, but could there be a less painful way to save money?
Last week, leaders from companies like AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer and Roche met in Vienna in a closed meeting to discuss the future of the pharma industry. Fears of layoffs at pharmaceutical companies are once again dominating the news, but could there be a less painful way to save money? Attendees at the Next Generation Pharmaceutical Drug Discovery Summit (hosted by GDS International) were among those leading the rumours of job cuts within the Drug Discovery Arena, but this was far…
Even in the good years, mental health budgets were seldom in line with what experts expected or deemed necessary. Thus, in times of budget deficits and scathing public expenditure cuts, the worry becomes even greater. For those that care most about the health service then, the Coalition government's decision to ring fence healthcare spending has been largely applauded.

Originally born under the Conservatives, but fully evolved under Labour, Private Finance Initiatives (PFIs) essentially offered the NHS an alternative way of paying for new hospitals and renovations at a time when public capital was said to be limited.
Originally born under the Conservatives, but fully evolved under Labour, Private Finance Initiatives (PFIs) essentially offered the NHS an alternative way of paying for new hospitals and renovations at a time when public capital was said to be limited. Specifically, instead of being burdened with the entire weight of the costs upfront, under PFI schemes private firms funded the initial construction, while NHS Trusts were left to pay off the resulting loans over a 30 to 40 year period. To make matters even more obtuse, many of these contracts…
While long prohibited under UK ABPI regulations, if you’ve worked in the world of big pharma in the U.S., you’ll have seen it all a hundred times. A drugs company sponsors a medical conference, they pay for the meals and flights of the delegates and they hand them all a goodie bag as they leave.
At the same time in a different part of the world, another pharma giant pays a doctor for a speaking engagement or sponsors a research project. For one school of thought this is a perfectly normal and reason…

We have a fundamental problem with our health service. It's bloated, it's weighed down in bureaucracy and it's terribly inefficient. That's if you believe the diagnosis of our health service by the new Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley.
We have a fundamental problem with our health service. It's bloated, it's weighed down in bureaucracy and it's terribly inefficient. That's if you believe the diagnosis of our health service by the new Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley. Indeed, not only is our health service inefficient, but it is incredibly disconnected from the people it’s meant to serve - the patients. For these reasons and others, Mr. Lansley is proposing the biggest shake-up of the health service in 60 years. 'Our guiding principle', Mr. Lansley says, will be ‘no decision about me, witho…
Back in May, it was announced that new stem cell research would reduce the need for animal testing. Now, we are really beginning to see the benefits of groundbreaking science that is not reliant on out dated methods of testing.
Back in May, it was announced that new stem cell research would reduce the need for animal testing. Now, we are really beginning to see the benefits of groundbreaking science that is not reliant on out dated methods of testing. The proposal was that by reprogramming powerful stem cells from adult tissue, we could look towards a future without animal testing. It is understood that huge amounts of money have been invested into drug discovery and the biggest problem faced by the industry is investing in drugs which may not make it onto the market. Europe has always b…
